SHS Baseball Drops Opener; NM Falls in Eatonville; Plus Tennis Results
The Shelton baseball team dropped its season opener Wednesday in eight innings falling to Montesano 8 to 6.
The Highclimbers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning.
After Max “Falcon” Johnson shutdown the Bulldogs in the top of the frame, Shelton’s Caeleb Hitsman led off the bottom of the inning with a walk. After Ty Smotherman struck out, Brenden Engstrom hit a double. Johnson then reached 1st on an error and Hitsman scored while Engstrom moved to 3rd and Johnson makes his way to 2nd. Trey Dehning singled, Engstrom scored and Johnson went to 3rd. Johnson then scored on a wild pitch to Zack Jonker. Dehning advanced to 2nd on an error and then to 3rd. Jonker walks. With runners at the corners, Matt Osberg grounded out as Dehning scored.
Montesano pitcher Evan Bates then shut out the ‘Climbers for the next three innings and the Bulldogs started chipping away at Shelton’s lead, scoring the next six runs. Parker Plato hit an RBI double in the 3rd. Cyrus Parsons hit a two-run home run in the 5th and had an RBI single in the 6th to tie the game.
The Bulldogs took the lead in the top of the 7th. Bates bunted in Aaron Lano with one out and Teegan Zillyet scored on a wild pitch. Montesano 6, Shelton 4.
Shelton answered in their half of the 7th. Hitsman doubled after Adam Goldsby led of with a fly out. Smotherman followed with a fly ball to right that sent Hitsman to 3rd. Engstrom reached on an error that scored Hitsman and moved Smotherman to 3rd. Johnson then dropped a fly ball into right field and Smotherman ties the game at 6. The next two Climber batters (Evan McCullough and Josh Deemer) struck out, leaving two on base.
The 8th inning belonged to Montesano. Cole Daniels reached 1st on an error. Carter Olsen grounded to 2nd forcing Daniels out. Lano then walks. Plato with a single that scores Olsen and advances Lano to 3rd. Bulldogs up 7 to 6. Lano then scores the final run on the second pitch to Zillyett. Zillyet then popped out and Bates grounded out.
In the Highclimbers half of the 8th, Montesano relief pitcher Payson Parker got Matt Osberg, Max Johnson and Goldsby to ground out to secure the Bulldogs’ victory.
Montesano is 2-and-0 on the young season. Top Bulldogs: Cyrus Parsons was 1 for 3 at the plate with a homerun and three RBI; Parker Plato was 2 for 4 with a double and two RBI;Aaron Lano was 2 for 4 with two doubles; and Evan Bates batted in a run.
Shelton was led by Max “Falcon” Johnson who was 1 for 3 at the plate with two RBI. Brenden Engstrom was 1 for 3 with an RBI. Trey Dehning and Matthew Osberg each batted in a run. And Caeleb Hitsman and Josh Deemer each hit a double.
The Highclimbers are on the road for their next three games – two of which are in Oregon. Friday, Shelton plays at Aloha High School in Beaverton, Oregon. On Saturday, they play at Rainier High School in Rainier, Oregon. The ‘Climbers open South Sound Conference play Tuesday at Capital and host the Cougars Wednesday on MasonWebTV Powered by HCC.
The Shelton girls’ tennis team lost at Black Hills 4 to 2. The Highclimbers travel to Tumwater Friday.
The North Mason baseball team was held to two hist and lost at Eatonville Wednesday 3 to 0. Troy McCormick and Jakob Stark were the only Bulldogs to reach base. Mason Fisher took the loss for the boys from Belfair allowing two runs on two hits while striking out two and walking one in three innings. NM is now 1-and-2 on the season. They host Port Angeles in Olympic League play today (Thursday, March 14th).
The North Mason fastpitch softball team opened its season with a 15 to 5 loss at Eatonville Wednesday. The Lady Bulldogs were held to three hits: Amber Johnson was 2 for 3 at the plate, had two doubles and scored two runs; #12 had the other hit and an RBI; Natalie Mathews and Alexia Serebryakov each batted in a run. The girls from Belfair travel to Centralia Friday.
The North Mason girls’ tennis team beat Klahowya Wednesday 7 to 1. The Bulldogs host North Kitsap Friday.
