The Mary M. Knight boys’ basketball team advanced to the next round of the 1B Southwest District Basketball Tournament with a 46 to 37 win over the Washington School for the Deaf.

The Owls held the Terriers scoreless for the first five minutes of the game and held a 13 to 3 lead after the first quarter.

WSD stormed back in the second quarter holding MMK to six points while scoring 16 and going up three with two minutes to go in the half. The teams headed to the locker room at halftime tied at 19.

Mary M. Knight took an eight-point lead in the third quarter as the Owls started to get to the free throw line, making 5 of 7 attempts in the quarter.

The fourth quarter saw the boys from Matlock build a 14-point lead, again from the free throw line going 8 for 11 and only hitting two field goals in the final eight minutes. The Washington School for the Deaf did dut MMK’s lead to eight points with about a minute and a half remaining but couldn’t complete the comeback.

The only negative aspect ot the Owls’ game Wednesday was 30 turnovers – 24 in the first half.

Isaiah Compton led Mary M. Knight with 20 points hitting 10 of 12 free throws and blocking three shots. Eddy Krippelcz added 12 points and two blocks. Quinnton Krippelcz chipped in 7 points. Dylan Ralph had 5. And Tayden Sowle was 2 for 4 at the free throw line.

The Terriers got 14 points from Jose Ramirez and 11 from Wylee Rodgers.

The Owls move into the double elimination portion of the District Tournament and play Naselle Saturday at 2 PM. The game is being played at Castle Rock High School.
