The Shelton football team lost to White River Friday 21 to 14. (Click here to watch the game.)

The game was scoreless until the 2:10 mark of the third quarter when the Highclimbers got on the board first with a three-yard run by Jayden Fuller, capping a 59-yard drive.

The Hornets responded on their next possession, also going 59 yards. On 4th & 11 from the Shelton 17, White River’s Devin Zweifel caught a pass from quarterback Tyson Campbell to tie the game.

The Hornet defense then forced a three-and-out and White River’s special teams also stepped up. Zweifel blocked the punt, Payne Plaster scooped the ball up and ran 40 yards for the touchdown, giving the Hornets their first lead: 14-7 with 7:15 remaining in the game.

Shelton then went 75 yards on five plays to tie the game. The drive included a 55-yard pass from Mason Goos to Gabriel Menefee and Fuller punching it in from two yards out with 6:05 left.

White River then took nearly five minutes off the clock and drove to the Highclimber 43 yard line where the Shelton defense forced the Hornets into a 4th & 15. However, White River gambled with a fake punt and Plaster scrambled for what turned out to be the game-winning TD.

Shelton did have a last drive from their own 49 with 1:15 remaining. The Highclimbers had some last-second heroics: on a 4th & 27, Goos launched a long pass that was caught by Matai Leisam at the Hornet 36 with 24 seconds remaining. Goos then scrambled to the 28 but the game ended with an interception by White River’s Xavier Braun in the end zone off a deflection. Braun ran out of the end zone and time expired.

The Hornets picked up their first win and head to Orting next Friday to open South Puget Sound League play.

The ‘Climbers start Evergreen Conference play next Friday against Centralia on Jack Stark Field at Highclimber Stadium.
