The Deckerville Fire started on Friday, July 31, 2015 at 4:13 pm. The fire burned an area north of the Deckerville Road approximately 3 miles west of Matlock. The fire burned across Decker Creek and moved in the direction of Ford Rd. The total area burned is estimated to be about 150 acres. The fire burned 13 structures and five of those were residences. The Red Cross was available Friday evening at the Matlock Community Church and was able to provide housing for some of the displaced families. The Matlock Community Church has been collecting water, food, and basic supplies for the displaced families. Donations can be dropped off at the Matlock Community Church or the Matlock Grange.
The fire moved quickly Friday evening due to the hot temperatures, dry conditions, and wind. Two air tankers and three helicopters helped to slow the fire’s spread Friday evening. Several interagency strike teams with engines and water tenders in addition to hand crews are working on the fire line. Dozers were used to help create a fire line around the north side of the fire. Cool conditions overnight kept the fire from flaring up. By Saturday mid-day the fire was considered 50% contained. Crews are actively working on hotspots on the edges of the fire and mopping up within the burned area. Late Saturday, Forest Service hotshot crews arrived to work felling trees and removing other fuel along the fire line.
Road Closures: Frisken Y Road is closed north of Deckerville Road. Deckerville Road, Ford Road, and Maple Road are open, but drivers should use caution around firefighter traffic.
Evacuations: Residents in the vicinity of the fire area (north of Deckerville Road) may return to their homes. However, due to the fire not being completely contained, any resident in the vicinity of the fire needs to be prepared to leave at a moment’s notice from local law enforcement.
Affected residents who need information or assistance with fire recovery should contact the Mason County Emergency Operations Center at 360-427-9670 extension 806.
