At 12:01 AM Tuesday, April 20, 2021, burn restrictions were put in place for Mason County. These “temporary county-wide outdoor burn restrictions” are in effect until further notice.

A news release says “The Mason County Community Development Director, as acting Fire Marshal, and in partnership with the Mason County Fire Chiefs’ Association, has determined that current weather conditions within Mason County have created substantial fire dangers and that there is a need to enact restriction on outdoor burning to all lands regulated by Mason County. This restriction applies to OUTDOOR BURNING, including land clearing and yard debris; and does NOT include prohibition of recreation fires, charcoal briquette barbeques, and existing burn permits. The use of gas and propane barbeques will continue to be allowed under the restriction.”

The news release also says lands protected by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) may have different restrictions. More information can be found on www.dnr.wa.gov or by calling the DNR South Puget Sound Region at 360-825-1631.

As of April 17, 2021, there is a “Rule Burn Ban” due to current fuel conditions and forecasted fire weather. A rule burn is “A fire that does not require a written permit has established size limitations based on time of year and the count with in which the burning occurs. From October 16th through June 30th individual pile size in Thurston County shall be limited to ten feet; pile size is limited to four feet in Mason, Kitsap, Pierce and King counties.”
