A 28-year-old Massachusetts woman was killed Thursday, November 4, while she was sleeping in her tent at the Staircase campground in Olympic National Park.

Mason County Coroner Wes Stockwell said that Emer R. Valdez from Wellfleet, Massachusetts, was camping with her boyfriend when at approximately 5 AM, a broadleaf maple tree estimated to be 100-150 years old fell on the tent Valdez and her boyfriend were sleeping in. Stockwell said that Valdez died immediately and her boyfriend, Sam Donnelly, age 28, also from Massachusetts, suffered a leg injury. The tree also crushed their car.

Stockwell said that the cause of death for Valdez was atlanto-occipital dislocation, and the manner accident.

The incident was investigated by the National Park Service.
