Orange construction signs, night work lead up to temporary changes to US 101
A project that will help fish migrate more easily will create temporary changes to U.S. Highway 101 near the Mason/Thurston County line.
As soon as Friday, July 19, crews will close the median between US 101 at Old Olympic Highway. Old Olympic Highway travelers will be limited to right turns only onto southbound 101.
In addition, travelers will also see weeknight single-lane closures and shoulder closures.
Keeping people moving during construction
By mid-August, both directions of U.S. Highway 101 will be reduced to one lane in each direction. Drivers will notice a reduced speed limit from 60 mph to 45 mph. At that time, the intersection of 101 and Old Olympic Highway will close to all traffic.
U.S. Highway 101 will be returned to two lanes in each direction by fall. The intersection and median will also reopen at that time.
Improving fish passage
The project is part of a larger WSDOT effort to replace culverts that act as barriers to fish under state highways. In addition to building new bridges, crews will also restore creek beds to improve fish habitat.
