The Shelton Police Department successfully concluded its first-ever Spanish-language Citizens Academy, a landmark effort aimed at strengthening relationships, improving communication, and increasing access to public safety education within the Spanish-speaking community.

The academy drew an average of fifty participants per session, demonstrating strong community interest and engagement throughout a four-week program.

Participants received instruction on several key public safety topics, including Driving Under the Influence (DUI), domestic violence laws, licensing, immigration and citizenship considerations, police procedures, and an interactive police K9 demonstration.

The program was created and led by Corporal Gary Portillo, who attended and facilitated each night of instruction. Shelton Police also partnered with regional agencies to enhance learning opportunities. The Mason County Sheriff’s Office and Washington State Patrol participated during select sessions, offering hands-on involvement, scenario-based learning, and direct interaction with attendees.

A special highlight of the academy included a guest presentation from The Honorable Judge Monty Cobb, who provided valuable insight into domestic violence law and court processes.

Shelton Police Department leadership expressed pride in the success of the academy and plans to continue expanding community-oriented programs that promote trust, education, and mutual understanding.

The Shelton Police Department would like to thank MCSO, WSP, Judge Cobb, St. Edwards Catholic Church, Corporal Portillo, Sgt. Hector Diaz, each assistant and planner, and, of course, to our community members who attended this event.
