Hoops Wins for SHS & MMK Girls, NM Boys; Losses for SHS Boys’ Hoops & NM Girls Hoops
The Shelton girls’ basketball team opened Evergreen Conference play Tuesday beating Black Hills 59 to 52. The Highclimbers improved their overall record to 9-and-1, 1-and-0 in EVCO play. The Lady-‘Climbers also improved their RPI ranking among Class 3A teams. Shelton is now ranked 2nd in the state behind Roosevelt. At last report, the Highclimbers’ RPI is 0.6765.
RPI stands for Rating Percentage Index which is a statistical system used to comparatively rank teams. A team’s RPI is one tool utilized by the seeding committees to determine first round bracket pairings into the State Tournaments.
Here is the formula used to determine RPI:
40% winning percentage (WP): Divide the number of wins by the number of total games played for your team.
40% Opponents’ Winning Percentage (OWP): Average of the winning percentage of a team’s opponents. Note: this is not calculated via the combined record of the opponents, but rather by averaging the winning percentage of the opponents.
20% Opponents’ Opponents’ Winning Percentage (OOWP): Same process as OWP except the calculation is with the opponents of the team’s opponent. Note: Out-of-state games are excluded.
Shelton travels to Aberdeen Thursday.
The Shelton boys’ basketball team came up short of Black Hills Tuesday, falling 51 to 50.

This game was close throughout. The Highclimbers led 10 to 9 after the first quarter. The Wolves had a 21-19 lead at the half. Shelton was up 34-33 after three and the largest lead in the game was 8 by Black Hills.
The Wolves had three player score in double digits: James Morgan with 15; Peyton Faught with 14; and Talon Morrill with 12. Quinton Morrill added 9 points. Morgan also grabbed 10 rebounds.
The Highclimbers were led in the loss by Bennett Henry’s 12 points. Brayden Phipps added 11 points. Masyn Gard finished with 10 points and 8 rebounds. Sam Parsons chipped in 10 points and 6 assists. And Jeremy Myers dish out 8 assists.
Shelton is now 5-and-6 on the season, 0-and-1 in the Evergreen Conference.

The Mary M. Knight girls’ basketball team coasted by Wishkah Valley Tuesday 67 to 14. The Owls were led by Senior Cloey Fletcher who had a double-double, with 24 points, 12 rebounds, 9 assists, 8 steals, and 5 blocks. Junior Bella Buck had a career high 17 points, 6 rebounds and a steal. Senior Maelynn Nygaard also had a double-double adding 14 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 steals. Carissa Reeves chipped in 8 points. And Andiana Ziegler and Hayden Hughes added 2 points each. MMK has won five in a row and improved to 5-and-3 on the season, 3-and-1 in Coastal League play. Mary M. Knight travels to Naselle Wednesday.
The North Mason boys’ basketball team picked up its first Olympic League win Tuesday, beating North Kitsap 48 to 36. The Bulldogs improved to 5-and-5 on the season, 1-and-4 in League play. NM hosts Bainbridge Friday.
The North Mason girls’ basketball team lost a close one at North Kitsap Tuesday 45 to 44. The Bulldogs drop to 3-and-7 on the season. 1-and-4 in Olympic League play. NM plays at Bainbridge Friday.
The North Mason girls’ bowling team beat Klahowya 4 to 3 Tuesday. The Bulldogs take their 6-and-3 record against 6-and-5 Olympic Thursday.
