Firefighters responded to a brush fire on Shelton’s Capital Hill on Wednesday that forced some residents to evacuate. The following is a news release on what is being called “Oakland Bay Fire”…

On Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at 5:38 pm, Central Mason Fire & EMS was dispatched to a report of a smoke investigation off Fir Street on Capital Hill. Upon arrival crews discovered a brush fire burning in scotch broom and timber. The fire was threatening homes off Capital Village Lane.

The fire was upgraded to a second alarm, Department of Natural Resources (DNR) responded and Unified Command was established. A DNR helicopter responded and made several water drops along the edge of the fire. Mason County Sheriff’s Office responded as part of the unified command and established a Level 3, Go Now evacuation from Capital Village Ln to Fogarty Ave and Walnut St to Bear Ave.

Crews continued direct attack of the fire. They were able to trail around the burn area and stop the fires forward progression. The fire was 1.21 acres in total with no damage to any structures. The cause of the fire is under investigation. A total of 21 apparatus and command vehicles responded in addition to DNR apparatus. A Level 1 evacuation remained in place overnight and was lifted Thursday morning.
