The Shelton girls’ basketball team dropped its first game of the season Wednesday, losing to Gig Harbor 56 to 45 in a game on MasonWebTV Powered by HCC.

The Highclimbers fell behind the Tides early being held scoreless for the first five minutes of the game. Down 11 in the first half, Shelton pulled to within 8 points at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Tides built a 16 point lead, holding the ‘Climbers to six points.

In the fourth, Shelton mounted a comeback and pulled within three points but was unable to get any closer.Turnovers and poor free throw shooting by the Highclimbers helped Gig Harbor pull away in the last two minutes.  are 5-and-0 on the season. Shelton finished with 17 turnovers and shot 48% from the free throw line (12 of 25) while the Tides committed 14 turnovers and hit 21 of 30 free throws (70%).

Gig Harbor had three players score in double digits: Brynna Maxwell with 15 points and 12 each from Abigail Nordquist and Emily Shields.

The Highclimbers were led in the loss by Katie Johnson’s 11 points and Timber Ware’s 8.

Shelton drops to 5-and-1 on the season, 1-and-1 in the South Sound Conference. The Tides improve to 4-and-2 overall (3-and-0 in SSC play).

The Lady Highclimbers hit the road Friday, traveling to Silverdale to take on Central Kitsap.

Caeleb Hitsman led the ‘Climbers in the loss with 13 points.

The Shelton boys drop to 2-and-2 on the season, 0-and-2 in the South Sound Conference.

The Highclimbers return to the Mini Dome Friday to face Central Kitsap on MasonWebTV Powered by HCC.
