At least one person has died after a car crashed into the water near Gorst Friday morning. Washington State Patrol spokesperson Julie Startup said one person was killed in the crash off Highway 3.
The rescue effort was launched about 6 a.m. after the northbound car, reported traveling at a high rate of speed, rear ended another vehicle, crossed the highway barrier, went through some bushes, slide down an embankment, landing about 75 feet off shore in Sinclair Inlet. Cause of the crash was not immediately known. The incident occurred within a mile of where a state trooper was gunned down and killed Thursday. The Kitsap Sun reports the active rescue ended just before 7 AM and rescuers are now waiting until low tide to raise the car from the water. The Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office boat and Navy Region Northwest rescue boat were on the scene. Northbound traffic on Highway 3 is backed up as one lane of the highway in that direction is closed.
