The National Transportation Safety Board says preliminary data obtained by investigators from the rear locomotive on the train that derailed near Mount Road in Pierce County Monday morning was traveling at 80 MPH on an area of track that has a 30 MPH speed limit. This track leads up to the curve and overpass where 13 of the train’s 14 cars jumped the tracks sending rail cars onto Interstate 5. The NTSB released that information during a news conference late Monday night.
NTSB officials also said investigators will be on scene for 7 to 10 days and have yet to interview crew members. The NTSB is collecting factual information and asks people with relevant information to send an email to [email protected].
