The Legislature on Thursday passed and sent the governor a bill that will give Washingtonians an alternative to traditional tire chains when it comes to improving traction in winter snow. The alternative is called tire socks, a tire traction device that originated in Scandinavia and is now used in 35 countries. The socks slide over the surface of the tires and grip the roadway, allowing a safer drive on slippery roads. Bill sponsor Senator Tracey Eide, D-Federal Way, says tire socks have several advantages over studded tires and chains including less noise, less vibration, easy installation, and do less damage to roadways. The bill was approved unanimously and is expected to be signed into law by the governor. The State Patrol will also need to complete some testing of the tire sock or auto sock.
MasonWebTV.com found several videos online talking about the auto sock both good and bad. This video, however, appears to be an independent review of the device. Please note, it appears that the tire sock is a temporary device that should only be used for short distances and at low speeds.
