The Washington State Patrol is investigating what caused a car to strike a tree on U.S. Highway 101 near Purdy Canyon Wednesday afternoon that sent a 16-year-old Shelton boy to the hospital.

A press memo says the teen was southbound on 101 in a 2006 Mazda 6 about 2 PM. Between milepost 339 and milepost 340, the car left the roadway to the right and struck the tree.

The boy was transported by ambulance to Mason General Hospital in Shelton.
