Mason County is ranked in the bottom five in the state in the latest Health Rankings by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. According to the website www.countyhealthrankings.org, Mason County is 35th out the state’s 39 counties in Health Outcomes with a ranking of 36 in morbidity and 29 in mortality. Mason County is ranked 29th in Health Factors with a ranking of 37 in health behaviors due to 25% of the adult population smoking, 31% of adults considered obese, 21% physically inactive, and 16% excessive drinkers.

The County ranks 27th in clinical care with 18% uninsured and a patient to doctor ratio of 2,220 to 1. Mason County ranks 24th Social and Economic Factors with 22% of the county’s children living in poverty and 32% living in single-parent households. Also contributing to that ranking is the County’s high unemployment rate over 11%. There is good news in this year’s Health Rankings for Mason County, it is ranked 11th in the state for its Physical Environment having only four days of unhealthy air quality a year due to particulate matter and zero days of poor air due to ozone. The healthiest counties in Washington are San Juan, Kittitas, Island, Whitman and Whatcom. The counties that rank lower than Mason County in Health Outcomes are Grays Harbor, Okanogan, Wahkiakum and Ferry. As for the other counties that surround Mason: Kitsap ranks 11th, Thurston County 14th, Jefferson is 21st, and Pierce sits at 26th.
