SHS Baseball Falls in Second District Game; Loss for SHS Softball; MMK Sub-District Track Results

The Shelton baseball team lost to Tumwater 9 to 1 in the semi-finals of the Class 2A District 4 Tournament Wednesday.

The Thunderbirds scored the game’s first run in the bottom of the fourth inning and the Highclimbers tied the game in the top of the fifth. Brendan Wagner hit a two-out double and Cole Schlender followed with an RBI single.

However, it was all Tumwater from the bottom of the fifth on.

Shelton was led by Cole Schlender who had two of the Highclimbers’ six hits and their only RBI. Wyatt Wagner, Brendan Wagner, Cannon Hutson, and Brady Rhoades had one hit each.

Tyrell Stewart took the loss on the mound, allowing one earned run on one hit with five strikeouts and a walk in four innings.

Shelton is now 16-and-6 on the season, 1-and-1 in the 2A District Tournament. The Highclimbers play Ridgefield Saturday at 2 PM with the winner advancing to the Regional round of the State Tournament and the loser going home. The Shelton fast pitch softball team couldn’t catch Aberdeen Wednesday falling 15 to 11.

The Bobcats scored a run in the first inning but the Highclimbers took the lead in the top of the second inning with two out. Sadie Mackiewicz batted in Bailey Plant and Sarah Jacoby scored on a bad throw.

Aberdeen responded in the bottom of the second, taking back the lead with three runs. Shelton tied the game in the top of the fourth. Danyka Squire led off the inning with a triple and scored on Christiana Alvarez’s ground out. Jacoby followed with a walk and after the second out, MacKiewicz tripled in Jacoby.

The Bobcats took a one-run lead in the bottom of the fourth but Kayla Zembas hit an RBI double to tie the game at five and Squire followed with an RBI single that gave the Highclimbers a 6 to 5 advantage in the top of the fifth.

Aberdeen responded with seven runs in their half of the frame. Shelton rallied for five runs in the top of the sixth inning. That included an RBI single by Mackiewicz, a two-run double by Allison Baumgart, Carly VanAagten’s RBI groundout, and an RBI triple by Squire but the Highclimbers were still down a run.

The Bobcats added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth and allowed only a lead off single by Jacoby in the top of the seventh.

Sadie Mackiewicz led Highclimbers at the plate going 3 for 4 with a triple and four RBI. Danyka Squire was 3 for 4 with two triples and two RBI. Allison BAumgart went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBI. Kayla Zembas hit a double and batted in a run. And Carly VanAagten also had an RBI.

Shelton drops to 5-and-15 on the season, 4-and-13 in the Evergreen Conference. The Highclimbers wrap up the season Friday at home against Rochester. MasonWebTV Powered by HCC will broadcast that game.

At the Class 1B District 4 Sub-District Championships Wednesday in Raymond, Mary M. Knight’s Danny Goeders finished 2nd in the boys’ 400 meters with a personal record time of 56.49a, was 4th in the 800 meters, and 4th in the high jump. The Owls’ Drake Jenkins was 8th in the boys’ shot put.
