Fire crews responded to an apartment fire on Christmas Eve.

At approximately 6:30 PM December 24th, Central Mason Fire & EMS (CMFE) was dispatched to the apartment fire in a center unit at 1100 North 12th Street at the Saratoga Springs apartments. When units arrived on-scene a resident was attempting to put the fire out with a garden hose to no avail.
In the early stages of the incident, the resident who occupied the fire apartment collapsed and became unresponsive. CMFE firefighters and paramedics immediately administered CPR. The elderly female patient was successfully revied and transported to Mason General Hospital. Later the patient was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with life threatening injuries. Her condition is unknown at the this time.
Meanwhile other CMFE personnel assisted by Mason County Fire Districts 11, 16 and 4, aggressively attacked the fire, successfully containing it to the apartment of origin. A dog and cat were also saved and there were no other reported injuries.
As a precaution, neighboring residents of four other apartments were displaced requiring temporary overnight housing. Faith Lutheran Church, across the street from the apartment, opened their doors allowing a warm dry place for evacuated residents who needed shelter during the fire. However, dDue to the holiday, Red Cross was unavailable to assist in the relocation process. CMFE worked with friends and neighbors to find a place for those displaced by the fire. Unfortunately, one individual was not able to be placed so IAFF (International Association of Firefighters) Local 2394 stepped up on Christmas Eve, locating and covering the cost of a hotel room for the night.
CMFE wants to thank other public service partners including the Shelton Police Department who helped to evacuate the apartment building, provided crowd, and traffic control. Officers also increased patrols in the area throughout the night due to the partially secured building after the fire. And Mason PUD 3 secured the utilities.
