A 55-year-old Union man has been reported as overdue from his hike in the Olympic National Park and a search is underway for David Snidder. According to reports from the Tacoma News Tribune and KING 5 TV, Snidder had planned to hike by himself on Monday and Tuesday along the Irely Lake Loop Trail. Snidder was due to check in with Olympic National Forest officials Wednesday morning, but didn’t show up. Park officials located his vehicle at the North Ford Campground, but he was no where to be found. A search was launched Wednesday afternoon, and a team continued the search on Thursday with the help of a helicopter. About 16 ground searchers, including 8 technical rescue team members from Olympic Mountain Rescue, a German Shepherd Search Dog and its handler from Pierce County and a helicopter were searching the area today (Friday). They are focusing the search in the area between Irely Lake and Reflection Lake, which has very steep and rugged terrain. Snidder is described as a capable hiker with experience in mountainous and snowy terrain. He is believed to be traveling with a daypack and basic essentials. Irely Lake Loop Trail is on the Westside of the Park in Jefferson County northeast of Lake Quinault.
