
Central Mason responders had a busy weekend responding to 62 calls. There were four larger events throughout Fire District 5 and one in a neighboring fire district. These incidents included wildfires and a car colliding with a building.

Saturday afternoon, May 13, 2023, at 5:03 pm, a large brush fire was reported off Kamilche Point Road in Mason County Fire District 4. Central Mason crews responded to the fire with command staff, an engine, and Central Mason’s Public Information Officer (PIO). The Kamilche Point Fire burned 41 acres of slash, reprod, and some heavy timber. Two DNR helicopters were dropping buckets of water over the heavy timber while a dozer and hand crews worked to place fire line around the fire edge.

Sunday morning, May 14, 2023, at 9:35 am, crews responded to a reported brushfire off Ritz Road on Harstine Island. This was a 100 x 20 brushfire burning in clear-cut. Crews were able to quickly contain the fire and turned it over to DNR to handle mop-up.

Sunday afternoon, at 12:50 pm, crews responded to another brushfire on the side of Pickering Road. The fire was reported as burning in the powerlines overhead. Upon arrival, crews found a 66 x 33 brushfire burning in the trees with flame height around 20 feet in the area impinging on the powerlines. PUD 3 responded to help with the powerlines while crews quickly extinguished and contained the fire.

Sunday, late afternoon, at 4:15 pm Central Mason crews responded to a burn investigation off Twilight Way in Allyn. Upon arrival crews found a wildfire quickly spreading through a clear-cut. The fire was about a half-acre and was upgraded to a brush 1 response. Crews were able to bring the fire under control and returned to service. DNR remained on scene to mop-up and monitor the fire.
Sunday evening, at 8:29 pm crews were toned to a traffic accident. Upon arrival, crews found a white Subaru had run into the Shelton Chamber of Commerce building on Railroad Avenue.

The building sustained some damage to the front and the driver was transported for evaluation at Mason General Hospital.
