At Mat Classic XXXV (the State Wrestling Championships) in the Tacoma Dome, North Mason came away with a championship while seven from Shelton placed.
North Mason’s Sadie Evans won the 1B/2B/1A/2A State Championship at 155 pounds. The Lady Bulldog won by fall over Maya Kunkel from Napavine in the finals on Saturday. To get in the finals, Evans won by fall over Steilacoom’s Amina Thomas in the semi finals. Sadie Evans won all four of her bouts at State.
Shelton’s Ty Fleshman finished 3rd in the state among Class 2A wrestlers at 126 pounds. Saturday, Fleshman lost to Orting’s Alan Salguero in the semi finals and then beat Justice Lopez from Orting and Alex Richardson from Foss to take 3rd place.
Shelton’s Adell Anderson took 4th place in the state at 105 pounds. The Lady Highclimber lost her semi-final bout Saturday to Toppenish’s Sophia Torrez before taking the consolation semi-final by decision over Malia Riojas from Granger. In the third place match, Anderson fell to Mya Herrera from Cascade (Leavenworth).
Shelton’s Hunter Leth took 6th in the state among Class 2A wrestlers at 175 pounds. In Saturday’s bouts, the Highclimbers won by decision over North Kitsap’s Morgan Paul to advance to the consolation semi-finals where Leth lost by decision to Benjamin Gomez from North Kitsap. In the 5th place match, Leth lost another decision this time to West Valley of Spokane’s Andrew Royston to take 6th place.
Shelton’s Angela Anderson finished 6th in the state at 235 pounds. Saturday, the Lady Highclimber advanced to the consolation semi-finals by beating Ava Ford from Sedro-Woolley but then fell to Royal’s Analy Castillo and Raymond’s Nina Siribun to take 6th place.
Shelton’s Logan Peach placed 7th in the state among Class 2A wrestlers at 132 pounds. On the second day of competition Saturday, the Highclimber lost to Nick Richardson from Foss before beating Pullman’s Evan McDougle to take 7th place.
Shelton’s Cole Borden took 7th in the state among Class 2A wrestlers at 138 pounds. Saturday, the Highclimber lost to Orting’s Zachary Martinez before beating Mason Townsend from Ridgefield to take 7th place.
Shelton’s Phenix Oleachea was 8th in the state among Class 2A wrestlers at 150 pounds. Saturday, the Highclimber lost to Tyrese Guzman from Shadle Park and White River’s Hunter Oswold to take 8th place.
At the State Swimming Championships Saturday the Shelton boys’ team finished tied with South Whidbey for 8th in the state among Class 2A teams.
The Highclimbers’ Tawan Benedict finished 3rd in the 100 Fly and 6th in the 100 Breast Stroke.
Shelton’s relay team of Jayden Lovingfoss, Juah Holzgrove, Tawan Benedict and Ezra Keyers finished 7th in the 200 Medley.
And the ‘Climber relay team of Darren Arthur, Jayend Lovingfoss, Judah Holzgrove and Twawn Benedict took 8th in the 400 Free.
