A wildfire is burning under the High Steel Bridge and above lower Skokomish Trailhead, and is NOT accessible by foot. At last report, the fire was three to five acres in size, burning within it’s original footprint. Currently, no smoke is visible but with dry and hot conditions continuing, that could change.
According to the U.S. Forest Service, the fire was spotted late July 4th and is likely human caused. Over the weekend, water was dumped on the fire by helicopter while engines sprayed water from the bridge.
At this time, Olympic National Forest officials are asking all visitors to avoid Browns Creek Campground, Lower Skokomish Trailhead, LeBar Horse Camp, and surrounding areas. A closure order for the area is forthcoming.
In Washington State approximately 85% of wildland fires are human caused. Because the Olympic Peninsula is known for being wet and cool, fire safety may not always be top of mind.
It is crucial that everyone follows regulations and not use fireworks on public lands. Fireworks are not allowed on Olympic National Forest or Olympic. With excessive heat and dry conditions being extra cautious of campfires is extremely important. Make sure campfires are dead-out before departing.
