Fiber Forward: 106 in Union
Expanding Fiber Internet in Union
We’re excited to bring the next generation of internet to Union.
Hood Canal Communications is upgrading many customers in our original service area from cable modem internet to fiber optics. This initial investment along State Route 106 and surrounding areas will deliver faster, more reliable internet designed for how people use the internet today and in the future.
With fiber, you can experience the same fast speed (synchronous) for uploading and downloading, so video calls, streaming, cloud backups, and connected devices all perform better.
What This Means for You
This project is a full upgrade of the network serving your home. As part of this transition:
- Fiber infrastructure will be built throughout the project area along State Route 106
- Your current coaxial-cable-based service drop to your home will be upgraded to fiber
- New equipment will be installed at your home during an onsite scheduled appointment
Fiber technology delivers internet using light signals instead of traditional electrical signals, which allows for faster speeds, improved reliability, and long-term scalability.
Project Timeline
Construction Begins May 18, 2026
Fiber construction will begin along State Route 106 and nearby roads and will continue in phases throughout the area. Approximately 400 homes and businesses are within the current project area.
This project includes:
- Aerial construction (on existing utility poles)
- Underground construction (within utility easements or rights-of-way)
Fiber network construction is typically completed in stages, including planning, building the network, and then connecting homes once service is available.
What to Expect During Construction
You may notice crews working in your neighborhood as we build the fiber network.
During construction, you may see:
- Utility lines marked with temporary paint or flags
- Crews working along roads, easements, or utility poles
- Equipment used to place fiber underground or attach it to poles
- Short-term activity near your property
Most of this work takes place within public rights-of-way or utility easements. Once construction is complete, affected areas are restored as close as possible to their original condition. Construction activity is temporary, but the upgrade it supports is long-term and designed to serve your home for years to come.
We May Need to Contact You
As construction and rollout phases progress, Hood Canal Communications and our construction partners may need to contact you. This may include:
- Project updates
- Coordination if work is on your property
- Scheduling your fiber installation
Please contact our office to confirm your current phone number and email address so we can stay in touch with you.
Your Fiber Installation (Final Step)
Once fiber service is available at your home, the final step is an installation appointment. During your appointment:
- Existing coaxial-cable-based equipment (cable modem or MTA) will be replaced
- A fiber connection will be installed to your home
- An Optical Network Terminal (ONT) will be installed
The ONT is the device that converts the fiber signal into the phone and internet connection in your home. If you currently have Smart WiFi, you can continue using it. However, the equipment swap is still required to complete the upgrade to fiber.
Why Fiber?
Fiber internet is designed for how we use the internet today. Benefits include:
- Same fast (synchronous) upload and download speeds on most popular packages
- Improved reliability and performance
- Better experience for video calls, streaming, and cloud services
- A future-ready network that can support growing demand
Fiber networks are built to scale over time, meaning they can support higher speeds without replacing the underlying infrastructure.
