
The MACECOM Board has appointed Joe Schmit as the next Executive Director of the 9-1-1 agency. Schmitt began in the position August 1, 2024.
Joe Schmit is a seasoned professional with nearly 20 years of public sector experience. His career began in the United States Air Force as an Emergency Management Specialist. While serving in the military, Joe developed strong leadership skills and technical expertise that laid the foundation for his professional career path. Joe then spent the last 15 years at the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), where he held three key positions: Emergency Operations Specialist, Technology Resource Program Manager, and Technical Services and Operations Officer at the State Materials Laboratory.
“Joe brings a wealth of knowledge and skills to MACECOM and, coupled with his deep commitment to serving our community, will help ensure the public and first responders have access to life-saving emergency communications when they need it most,” said Kevin Shutty, Chair of the MACECOM Legislative Board. “The Board of Directors was unanimous in our appointment of Joe, and he has our full confidence to lead the organization into the future.”
In addition to his professional roles, Joe has been actively involved in his community, serving as a Shelton City Councilmember and a MACECOM Governance Board member. These experiences have given him a deep understanding of the organization’s operations and challenges. Now, as the Executive Director of MACECOM, Joe is dedicated to enhancing public safety communications, improving workplace culture, and leading the organization to new heights.
MACECOM serves as the primary public safety answering point for Mason County and operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It is overseen by a Board of Directors comprised of leaders from City, County, and Tribal governments and emergency responders.
