High school football got underway Friday with differing results for two new coaches in Mason County.

The John Fullington-era of North Mason football started with a 37 to 6 win for the Bulldogs over Klahowya.

NM quarterback Danner Jones found the end zone three times: twice with his legs (from 4 yards out and 1-yard sneak) and threw a 12-yard TD pass to Derek Dunham. Caden Atencio added the boys from Belfair’s other two touchdown on runs from 5 and 6 yards out. And kicker Xavier Powell put North Mason on the scoreboard first with a 27-yard field goal.

Next Friday, the Bulldogs open Olympic League play hosting Kingston.

Josh Munro’s debut as Shelton football coach didn’t go so well as the Highclimbers dropped their season opener to River Ridge 51 to 7.

The Hawks started fast: taking the opening kickoff 90-yards for a touchdown and taking the ball away from the ‘Climber three times in the first quarter to build a 44 to 0 halftime lead. Shelton’s score came at the end of the third quarter when Bennett Henry out jumped his defender in the end zone and caught a 15-yard pass from Wyatt Depoe.
