A wildfire burning near Toonerville Drive northwest of Belfair has prompted an evacuation and mobilized state resources. The fire was reported about 4:30 PM Tuesday and those in the area were under a Level 3 Evacuation (GO NOW) order about 6:45 as some 50 homes are threatened.
The American Red Cross has established an evacuation shelter for those affected by the Toonerville Fire at the Belfair Community Church, 23300 State Route 3 in Belfair.
At last report, the Toonerville Fire was 70 acres. No containment but work done by helicopters and fixed Wing air tankers significantly slowed the fires progress. Ground crew supported by bulldozers are continuing work on initial containment lines. Fire engines are staged at houses most threatened by the fire.
Cause of the fire is under investigation.
State Fire Mobilization Authorized for the Toonerville Fire
State fire assistance has been mobilized under the Washington State Fire Services Resource Mobilization Plan in support of local firefighters working to contain the Toonerville Fire in Mason County, near the city of Belfair. Washington State Patrol Chief John Batiste authorized the mobilization of state firefighting resources on July 8, 2025, at 9:30 p.m. at the request of Assistant Fire Chief Scott Cooper, North Mason Regional Fire Authority.
The Toonerville Fire started on July 8, 2025, at approximately 4:28 p.m. This fire is estimated at 50 acres and growing. It is burning in timber, logging slash, and brush and is threatening homes. Level 3 evacuations are in effect at this time. The fire cause is currently under investigation.
The State Emergency Operations Center at Camp Murray is activated to Level 2, partial activation, to help coordinate state assistance for the Toonerville Fire. Mobilization specialists from the Fire Protection Bureau have ordered two wildland strike teams to aid in containment efforts. State Fire Marshal’s Office personnel are both en route to the scene and working remotely to coordinate the dispatch of resources.
Under the State Fire Services Resource Mobilization Plan, the Fire Protection Bureau coordinates the initial dispatch and continued administrative oversight of resources and personnel for the duration of the mobilization. The Mobilization Plan is implemented to provide a process to quickly notify, assemble and deploy fire service personnel, equipment and other resources from around the state when fires, disasters or other events exceed the capacity of local jurisdictions.
