[VIDEO] The Port of Shelton Commission has awarded a contract to build a replacement for the Baja Saw Tooth building that was destroyed by fire in 2021. The Port received a dozen bids for constructing the 35,000 square foot building and the Port Commission unanimously awarded the contract to Mountain Construction out of Lakewood. (Commissioners Dick Taylor and Kristy Buck were in-person, Commissioner Dale Elmlund attended remotely.) Tuesday’s action followed a presentation by Brandon Palmer, Port Engineering Manager, and Wendy Smith, Port Executive Director.
Mountain’s bid on the building is $6,235,526. Engineer’s estimate on the replacement building was $10 Million. Insurance is covering the bulk of the cost to replace the structure. The replacement building will be taller than the original 1940’s era structure to accommodate a crane. Construction is anticipated to take 14 months to complete.
Fire destroyed what was known as Baja Saw Tooth building on April 13, 2021. The structure was occupied at the time by M & R Distributing, a cannabis operation. Some 70 firefighters from a dozen fire departments battled the blaze and kept it from spreading to adjacent structures at Sanderson Field.
