The Thunder took advantage of kickoff miscues to build and early 14-0 lead before the Highclimbers found the end zone on a 13-yard run by Jay-Jay Rhoades.
After a 28-yard Mountain View field goal, Shelton’s Trevor Gott scored on a four-yard run but the two-point conversion failed and MV was up 17 to 12 which was the score at halftime.
There were nine turnovers in the first half.
The Highclimbers started the third quarter with a defensive stand that gave them a short field. Ryan Brady then found a wide open Rhoades on the sidelines and the junior running back streaked 42 yards to his second TD of the game. Rhoades then added the two-point conversion and Shelton took a 20 to 17 lead.
The third quarter ended with a Highclimber take away as Fletch Henry ripped the football away from a Thunder received. The sophomore returned the ball 52 yards to the end zone but the referees ruled he wasn’t able to advance a recovered fumble.
Two and a half minutes into the fourth quarter, the game changed. After failing to take advantage of another takeaway, the Highclimbers’ defense forced a punt. On the next play, Rhoades went 64 yards for his third touch down.
After another defensive stop, Brady threw a pass to Ethan Corbin who went 24 yards and extended Shelton’s lead to 34-17.
On Mountain View’s first play after the kickoff, Alberto Manzo picked off a short pass and returned it five yards for another Highclimber TD.
The Thunder then put together a drive to the Shelton one yard line but the ‘Climber defense wasn’t done. Jaden Gray jumped in front of what looked like a sure one-yard Mountain view TD pass and took the ball 99 yards for Shelton’s final touchdown.
The Highclimbers’ Jay-Jay Rhoades finished the game with 231 yards rushing.
The Thunders’ DJ Wilford caught 20 passes out of the 33 Mountain View receptions on 66 pass attempts.
Shelton improved to 2-and-5 on the season, 1-and-2 in the 3A Greater St. Helen’s League. The Highclimbers hit the road next Friday at travel to Battle Ground to take on Prairie. MasonWebTV Powered by HCC will be on hand for the game.
