On October 20, PUD 3 and partners from multiple agencies across Mason County gathered at the Belfair substation off Highway 3 to celebrate completion of upgrades in the substation and the construction of a new switching station. These are part of a multi-phase effort to expand electrical capacity and reliability in the North Mason area.

“These upgrades represent more than just infrastructure improvements – they’re a commitment to the future of North Mason,” PUD 3 CEO Annette Creekpaum said. “These investments ensure that as our communities grow, we’re ready to deliver safe, reliable, and resilient power.”
The Belfair substation saw multiple upgrades featuring the replacement of its 1967 power transformer. The new modern, higher capacity transformer was placed in July, and after a few months of connecting and testing, it was energized on October 6. PUD 3 held a ribbon cutting at the October 20 gathering to recognize the completion of the project.
Next to the Belfair substation, construction has been underway for a new switching station. The switching station modernizes PUD’s tap from the Bonneville Power Administration transmission lines, allowing circuits to branch off in multiple directions increasing reliability at current substations and providing access to a future substation planned for North Mason County. The October 20 event featured a ceremonial groundbreaking to recognize the work.
PUD 3 staff and commissioners also shared gratitude for the support of local agencies and elected officials. Many provided support letters for grants that the district has received. The project received $3 million from former U.S. Representative Derek Kilmer. Mason County passed-through $1.5 million of American Recovery Plan Act funds to the project. This past year, 35th District state legislators banded together to secure $1 million for a future phase of the project. PUD 3 staff continue to pursue grant funding toward the project’s completion.
Rep. Travis Couture, 35th District, was present to share a few words about the importance of infrastructure to prepare for growth and boost the economy.

More is to come on this project, which will also include a new transmission line and substation to serve growth in the greater Belfair area. Read more at pud3.org/Belfair.
