MMK Football Falls in Championship
Saturday, the Mary M. Knight football team played Wishkah Valley for the Class 1B Coastal League Six-Man football Championship with the Loggers beating the Owls 58 to 30.
MMK got on the board first when Micah Palmer threw a pass to Jordan Wood who went 19 yards for the touchdown. Chase Tupper kicked the two-point conversion and Mary M. Knight led 8 to 0 with five minutes left in the first quarter.
The Owls’ Hunter Gilmore-Hulford recovered a WV fumble on the 17 yard line. However, MMK was not able to capitalize on the takeaway.
Wishkah Valley scored its first touchdown with seconds left in the first quarter but the kick on the points after failed, so Mary M. Knight had a two-point lead: 8 to 6. The Loggers then took the lead with seconds left in the first half, going 38 yards on six plays to go up 14 to 8 at halftime.
In the third quarter, WV took their opening drive and scored got up 22 to 8.
The Owls responded with a two-play, 49-yard drive with Jordan Wood breaking through the line for the 49 yards dragging a defender across the goal line. Tupper added another two-point conversion and MMK trailed 22 to 16.
Mary M. Knight took the ball away from Wishkah Valley midway through the third quarter but again the Owls couldn’t capitalize.
On the Loggers next offensive play, they scored on a 57-yard run and went up 30 to 16. WV added another touchdown early in the fourth quarter to lead 36 to 16.
On the ensuing kickoff, Ryder Lake returned the ensuing kickoff 74 yards for MMK. With another Tupper kick the Owls were down 36 to 24.
Wishkah Valley responded with a three-play 41-yard drive and their lead was back to 20: 44 to 24 with under eight minutes left in the game. The Loggers scored again after getting MMK off the field in four plays. WV pushed its lead to 50 to 24 with five minutes left in the game. Wishkah Valley recovered the kickoff but fumbled it back to Mary M. Knight.
The Owls them went 70 yards on five plays (that included a 32-yard run by Lake) with Wood running it into the end zone from five yards out. With just over two minutes remaining, WV 50, MMK 30.
Wishkah Valley added another TD on the first play of their next possession (a 37-yard run) building their advantage to 58 to 30.
Mary M. Knight finishes the season with a 4-and-5 record. Wishkah Valley goes undefeated in eight games.
