The City of Shelton today announced that Police Chief Chris Kostad will retire on May 31, 2026, concluding a distinguished 25-year career in law enforcement, including 20 years of dedicated service with the Shelton Police Department.
Chief Kostad began his law enforcement career in Southern California in 2000 before joining the Shelton Police Department in 2006. Throughout his tenure, he served in numerous key roles — including Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer, Detective, Corporal, Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Captain — before being appointed Chief of Police. His responsibilities have included daily operational management, supervision of first-line supervisors, oversight of investigations, accreditation management, training coordination, and policy development.
“Chief Kostad’s leadership has strengthened our police department, expanded its professionalism, and deepened its relationship with the community,” said City Manager Mark Ziegler. “His commitment to service, mentorship, and integrity will have a lasting impact on our city.”
Following Chief Kostad’s retirement, City Manager Ziegler has appointed Captain Dan Patton to serve as the next Chief of Police effective June 1, 2026.
Captain Patton has 25 years of law enforcement experience, including two years as Police Captain and five years as Police Sergeant with the Shelton Police Department. His leadership background includes management of patrol and investigations, administrative oversight, labor relations, community policing, accreditation support, policy review, and officer development.
Patton is a graduate of the prestigious FBI National Academy (Session 286), an elite executive leadership program for law enforcement professionals. He also holds a Master of Science in Public Safety from the University of Virginia and a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Ashworth College.
Throughout his career, Patton has supervised patrol officers, detectives, and administrative staff; coordinated training initiatives; managed field operations; led strategic planning and resource allocation; and mentored officers at all levels.
“Captain Patton has demonstrated exceptional leadership, professionalism, and a strategic approach to community safety,” said City Manager Ziegler. “He is well-prepared to guide the department forward and continue the strong legacy of service established under Chief Kostad.”
