Twanoh State Park’s day-use area will close for several weeks this summer for a shoreline and creek restoration project that will enhance salmon habitat.

The partial closure will begin July 5 and the area is expected to reopen in late August. Camping will remain open all summer. During construction, sites will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. When the restoration work is complete, sites will become reservable again.

Salmon habitat enhancement

The Twanoh restoration project will enhance salmon habitat by improving several key areas within the park. Work must be completed in summer to avoid impacts to migrating salmon and other fish. Twanoh has two naturally occurring salmon species: Chum and silver.

Restoration work includes:

  • Restoring and stabilizing the park’s shoreline against erosion
  • Reestablishing a natural shoreline buffer to reduce water pollution
  • Restoring the creek that runs through the park into Hood Canal
  • Removing a retaining pond on the park’s north side so free flowing water can enter the creek

Closures include:

  • Main day-use parking lots
  • Beach and pier access
  • Dock and boat launch
  • Area restrooms
  • Kitchen shelters and picnic areas

Visitor impacts:

Though the park will remain open through construction, the parking lots and day-use area at Twanoh will be an active construction site. For everyone’s safety, please respect all closures.

Shellfish harvesting, including the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife’s designated shrimp harvesting day on July 7, will not be open at Twanoh.

The Posh Pescatarian, a local seafood concessionaire operating out of the park, will remain open throughout the project. Visitors are encouraged to visit and enjoy a meal. The north parking lot will be open for Posh Pescatarian diners and customers.

First-come, first-served campers staying in the park overnight may hear some construction noise in the evenings. Crews will be working during low tides.

For more summer camping and beach exploration opportunities in the area, neighboring state parks Potlach and Belfair are each within a 20-minute drive of Twanoh. Both parks will be open all summer. Check Twanoh park alerts for updates.
