NM Football Takes Mason County Cup; Loss for MMK Volleyball
The North Mason football team opened the 2026 season Friday night with a 34 to 27 win over Shelton in the Mason County Cup. With the win, the Bulldogs take the Axe back to Belfair for the first time since 2019.

On the first possession of the game, NM’s Remi McFarlane intercepted a Shelton pass that led to a 15-yard touchdown pass from Reid Shumaker to Derek Dunham. North Mason added another TD in the first quarter when Shumaker threw a slant to Dunham who ran 43 yards to make it 12-0.
The Highclimbers got on the board seven seconds into the second quarter on a three-yard pass from Ryan Brady to Jay Jay Rhoades which capped a 99-yard drive.
Shelton took the lead for the first time midway through the second quarter on a one-play drive that saw Jayden Gray take a pass from Brady 54 yards for the TD and the ‘Climbers led 13 to 12.
The Bulldogs responded on their next possession. NM’s Nolan Shumaker took the kickoff 77 yards that set up a four-yard TD run by Bozey Tupolo and a two-point conversion on a pass to Owen Dukeshier, making the score 20 to 13.
North Mason extended its lead late in the half (27-13) on Brayden Bourboulis’ one-yard TD run.
Shelton cut that deficit to eight with seconds left in the half on a 19-yard Brady pass to Hayden Cash and the teams went into the locker room with North Mason leading 27 to 19.
In the second half, scoring stalled until early in the fourth quarter when the Highclimbers tied the game at 27. Silas Hoff took a Brady pass 26 yards for the touch down and Rhoades caught a pass for the two-point conversion.
The Bulldogs then took back the lead on what turned out to be the winning touchdown: McFarlane took a pass to the end zone from 42 yards out.
North Mason holds its home opener next Saturday, September 12th, against Mount Rainier.

The Mary M. Knight volleyball team lost at Evergreen Lutheran on Friday in three sets: 25-23; 25-15 & 25-18. The Owls host Concordia Christian Academy on Tuesday.
