Win for MMK Football; Loss for NM Football…
[VIDEO] The Mary M. Knight six-man football team opened the season Saturday with a 47 to 0 non-league win over Wishkah Valley. After the game, MasonWebTV Powered by HCC spoke with Coach Tom Kerr and players Hunter Hulford and Gabe Walters:
The Owls scored on their game-opening drive, going 45 yards on five plays with a 28-yard touchdown run by Gabe Walters.
MMK’s next scoring drive was in the second quarter and was set up by a fumble recovery. Mary M. Knight went 68 yards on six plays with Dayton Triggs scoring on a 27-yard run and kicked the two-pointer after his TD.
The Owls defense then stopped the Loggers on the 25 yard line. Taking over on downs, MMK’s Triggs scored his second TD on a 14-yard run. Mary M. Knight lead 20 to 0 at the half.
In the third quarter, the Owls scored quickly and often. After recovering another WV fumble, Hunter Hulford went eight yards for MMK and Triggs kicked another two-point conversion to make it 28-0.
After another defensive stop, Walters ran 35 yards for his second TD.
Mary M. Knight forced another Wishkah Valley punt and then had a four-play 45-yard drive with Walters finding the end zone for a third time. The senior added the point after and the Owls led 41 to 0.
MMK’s defense scored the game’s final TD on a pick six by Emmett Jones.
Mary M. Knight opens Coastal League Six-Man football next Saturday against Taholah. Kickoff in Matlock is 1 PM.
Tough loss for the North Mason football team Saturday as the Bulldogs dropped their home opener to Mount Rainier 25 to 20.
NM trailed the Rams 19 to 7 late in the third quarter and went on a six-play 64-yard drive that included a 45-yard pass play from Reid Shumaker to Brayden Bourboulis. Bourboulis capped the drive with a two-yard touchdown run pulling North Mason within five points of Mount Rainier (19 to 14).
After a forcing a three-and-out, the Bulldogs went on a 15-play, 83-yard drive that ended on a one-yard TD run by Shumaker and NM took a 20 to 19 lead with 3:55 remaining in the game.
However, the ensuing kickoff went out of bounds which put the ball on the 35 and the Rams scored on one play from scrimmage, going 65 yards on the ground to retake the lead 25 to 20.
North Mason then got great field position after Mount Rainier penalties and four kickoffs. The Bulldogs started on the Rams’ 40 and drove to inside the five before Mount Rainier stripped the ball away and recovered the fumble on the four with less than a minute remaining.
All the Rams had to do was run out the clock.
North Mason now has a 1-and-1 record. The Bulldogs open Olympic League play next Friday against Port Angeles. The game will be played at Phil Pugh Stadium in Belfair.
