The Stretch Island Bridge will be closed to ALL traffic on Tuesday, October 20, 2026 from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm while WSDOT repairs the timber cap.
Mason County Public Works implemented emergency gross load weight restrictions for the Stretch Island Bridge on Wednesday, September 2, 2026 after inspectors found a deformed 12″ x 12″ x 27′ timber pile cap at Pier #13. The bridge has been reduced to one lane alternating traffic since then.
Mason County contracted with the Washington State Department of Transportation for the replacement timber materials to repair the bridge. Repairs are expected to take three days, which require the one-day full closure of the bridge on Tuesday.
Originally built in 1920 and rehabilitated in 1973, Stretch Island Bridge is a timber stringer bridge on East Eckert Road that serves as the only vehicle access point onto Stretch Island.
