In the first half, each team scored a touchdown and a field goal with NM up 10 to 9 at halftime – the difference: a missed extra point.
North Mason scoring: 33-yard field goal by Keenan Bartosovsky and a 42-yard TD pass from Reid Shumaker to Derek Dunham.
Washington scoring: 32-yard TD run by Harel Sam and a 29-yard Field goal by Mike Taele.
The second half saw Washington take a 15-10 lead on Sam’s 14-yard TD run.
North Mason responded early in the fourth quarter on a 56-yard TD pass from Shumaker to Dunham. The Bulldogs added the two-point conversion (a pass to the back of the end zone to Micah Greer) for what turned out to be the final score of the game as the NM defense stopped the Patriots’ next drive when Nolan Varick picked up a fumble at the North Mason ten yard line and returned it 88 yards to the Washington 21 with 4:09 left in the game.
However, the Bulldogs were unable to capitalize on the turnover, giving the Patriots a chance at one more drive but NM’s defense stepped up again and stopped Washington. North Mason was then able to run out the clock.
Unofficial individual totals for the Bulldogs:
Derek Dunham caught 8 passes for 169 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Reid Shumaker completed 9 of 22 passes for 177 yards.
Brayden Bourboulis had 19 carries for 73 yards.
North Mason improves its record to 6-and-4 and now heads to the Round of 32 on Saturday playing at Anacortes.
