On Saturday, January 19, 2013, Hood Canal Communications’ subscribers in the Allyn, Belfair, and Shelton areas experienced a service outage that began at approximately 4:30 a.m. The outage affected an estimated 3,500 residential and business subscribers with telephone, video, or broadband services. At approximately 9:00 a.m., services began to be restored, with all services completely restored by 4:00 p.m.
According to Mike Oblizalo, Plant Manager, the outage was caused by vandals that illegally accessed an underground vault and stole fiber optic cables. The problem was identified with in an hour and repairs began shortly thereafter.
The volume of customers trying to report the outage over-loaded the company’s voice T1, in some cases causing up to a 45-minute delay to get through to the company’s main telephone line. Customers are encouraged to check Hood Canal Communications’ Facebook page for up-to-date outage information.
Hood Canal Communications is a local communications service provider with approximately 5,300 customers including several major commercial clients in Mason County.
